I actually run a market research firm and have been in the business for more than 12 years. I started out as a geneticist! The carryover was a background in statistics and scientific research design. Most universities do not have concentrations in market research. However, I would recommend college courses in social sciences, natural sciences, and definitely statistics. Another tip... most methodologies can be applied to multiple industries. I got my start in the healthcare arena and now serve other industries such as top tier law firms, business education, and techology firms. Would be happy to answer any further questions you may have.
