Should I major in Economics, Marketing, Business Management or Finance?

Right now I'm a Marketing major, but I'm thinking about switching to Economics because it may be more practical. I want to do Marketing, but something more along the lines of Marketing Research or management, as opposed to sales. I'm also thinking about double majoring in Marketing and Economics, or there are also the other 2 choices (Finance and Management). I also have the option of picking one major and going for my MBA. What would you do and why? Or what are some of the job prospects and growths with these majors? Thank you so much!

Should I major in Economics, Marketing, Business Management or Finance?
I had that same problem earlier this year. I was trying to decide between Marketing and Finance. Most jobs right out of College will be dealing with sales....it is usually a starting point for most graduates. But with Marketing, I am not sure what school you go to, but you can persue a particular aspect of Marketing like IMC (Intergrated Marketing Communications) [e.g., advertising, media, sales promotion, event marketing, direct marketing etc.]. I chose finance, but I was told that my bachelors wont matter once I recieve my MBA. So my suggestion is to do what you like the most. PS. Job opportunitiesfor most jobs are going to be widly available due to the baby boomer's retirement; but I believe it would go: accounting, finance, Econ/Marketing. Good Luck!
Reply:Don't switch to economics. I know people who graduated with an econ degree and have no idea of what to do with it. Finance is always a good major as well as accounting. You could do a lot with either of these degrees.

I'm an accounting major and the job prospects are hot...plus they pay really well.
Reply:you sound smart. i wouldnt worry about it. learn how to use your assets, thats what will get you ahead.
Reply:I'm not sure why you would think that econ is a more practical major to have. i would assume it's b/c you are aware of the decline of the us economy, therefore believe that more/better jobs may be available in the future. however, every company uses marketing whether they have a marketing dept or not. marketing is a core function of every business. without it, no one would know what products are available for consumption by consumers. no matter what happens to the economy, companies are still going to have to push their products on consumers. that's where the marketer comes in.

marketing is not all about sales. there are so many different aspects of marketing that you can go into. research, strategy, creative, branding, etc...i do sales right now only b/c marketing is a tough field to get into. i chose this route b/c it will be easier to get into a marketing role in the future. actually, i'm waiting for an offer from the biggest advertising firm in the world. based on the sales exp. i have, they believe i would be a good fit. well that amongst other things i can offer them.

i have a degree in marketing, and i wish i would have double majored in finance. that's b/c i hope to one day be executive management and some sort of background in finance is definitely helpful. management, i feel, can be learned on the job through experience.

since my ultimate goal is to work in strategy or branding, i will eventually pursue an MBA in marketing. having this MBA will definitely help me with that, but hopefully with becoming executive mgmt as well.

either way you go, finance or marketing, you will definitely have a great future. it will take time for you to make the big bucks in marketing, whereas finance you may see the "ROI" quicker. it really just depends on what you want to do more. if your looking into research, but you like finance, there are jobs as financial researchers. i don't know how exciting that is but that's your decision. anyway, good luck with whatever you decide.
